Yes on N&P; Yes on Indian Casinos?

Congratulations, Westfield.  You have successfully duped 6,201 Arcadia voters into believing that a foreign corporation cares more about the future of our city than does our own City Council (the majority of which these same voters elected into office just 7 months ago).

I am constantly amazed at how gullible people can be.  It proves that if you are willing to spend enough money ($3,138,100 equating to $506 per vote), some people will swallow anything!  Westfield spent almost $150,000 in just the week before the election alone, some of that to have "Yes on N & P" signs posted illegally on public right-of-way along Colorado and Huntington on election day.  Not only does Westfield rewrite our laws, they flaunt existing law to do it!

I’m sure if we end up with an Indian casino on the Santa Anita parking lot, Westfield will be ecstatic…much more traffic, but no competition to their mall.  And irrespective of Measures N & P, an Indian casino will be able to charge for parking and have garish neon signs because our local laws will not apply to them.

If those 6,201 of you who fell for Westfield’s political scare tactics don’t believe that can happen, wake up and smell the coffee.  Are you aware that the Tongvah tribe lived on these very grounds for many centuries up to the early 1800s?

I don't care much for Westfield as a company. However, the attempt to excite the xenophobia of a population was inappropriate. I don't mind if you rail against corporations. I was offended, though, that you'd stoop to railing against one because it is "foreign." For your information, Arcadia is full of foreigners and the word "foreign" isn't supposed to be bad and it is irrelevant to the issues.

That said, I do think that the city council should typically rule on these kinds of issues... but you know how the political system works. Most people don't know anything about their city council. They don't know who is running it, they don't know who to vote for, they don't attend meetings and could care less to wade through the hours of tedium to figure these things out.

What they do know is that the city council wouldn't mind having paid parking in Arcadia... and many people actually oppose that for reasons other than what Westfield says.

You demonstrate your contempt for the voting public in your recent blog postings. That's inexcusable. I don't work for either side of the issue. I keep an open mind and I do my research. I'll tell you that I voted NO on this measure, but I did so without calling anybody stupid. My mother voted YES, by the way.
